Surge is Bernard’s debut collection, written in response to their archive research on the 1981 New Cross Fire in London, to which 14 Black lives were lost. Following the fire, government support for survivors and bereaved families was lacking, sparking anger and protest, and the cause of the fire remains unsolved.
Bernard explores connections with the Grenfell tower fire in this poetic and political work of excavation and documentary. It's an original and important collection.
